Acid Mine Drainage
Our Technologies for Acid Mine Drainage Treatment & AMD Management
As mining activities cease, the oxidation of exposed sulphide minerals often leads to acid mine drainage (AMD). Without proper AMD management, the heavy metals mobilized by this acidic water can represent a major environmental liability and a continuous financial drain. BQE Water provides advanced acid mine drainage treatment solutions that go beyond standard neutralization:
- Selectively recovers valuable base metals (like copper) prior to final neutralization.
- Generates revenue from recovered metals to offset long-term water treatment operating costs.
- Significantly reduces the massive volume of hazardous waste sludge produced by conventional lime plants.
- Ensures reliable compliance with the most strict environmental discharge limits.
CHEMSULPHIDE® FOR COPPER RECOVERY
Our ChemSulphide® process selectively precipitates dissolved metals from highly acidic mine water. By integrating this step before final neutralization, we extract commercial-grade solid sulphides, turning a toxic AMD stream into a new revenue source.
HDS LIME NEUTRALIZATION INTEGRATION
We expertly design and integrate High Density Sludge (HDS) lime neutralization steps into the overall AMD treatment flowsheet. Following metal recovery, this final polishing step efficiently neutralizes the remaining acidity and precipitates residual trace metals, ensuring the final effluent is completely safe for environmental discharge.

DEXING MINE
At the Dexing Mine, low-grade ore waste dumps generate copper-laden acid mine drainage. We designed, built, and operate a 48,000 m³/day ChemSulphide® plant that successfully recovers copper from the AMD. The plant generated enough revenue from copper concentrate sales to pay back the initial plant capital in less than three years.
Frequently Asked Questions About Acid Mine Drainage Treatment
Can you recover metals from acid mine drainage?
Yes. Instead of just neutralizing the water, our ChemSulphide® process selectively targets and recovers valuable base metals like copper directly from the acid mine drainage. This generates a saleable copper concentrate that can significantly offset the life cycle costs of the water treatment plant.
Why integrate metal recovery with traditional HDS lime treatment for AMD management?
Treating AMD with High Density Sludge (HDS) lime neutralization alone generates massive volumes of hazardous waste sludge that require perpetual, costly management. By recovering the valuable metals first, we drastically reduce the total volume of waste sludge produced by the subsequent lime step, lowering your long-term disposal liabilities.
